Below are the programs and organizations that have been awarded grants thus
far in 2006.
Camp
Dudley
Camp Dudley, located in the
Adirondack Mountains on the shores of Lake Champlain, is the oldest
continuous boy’s camp in the United States. The summer of 2004 will mark
its 120th anniversary, and within the past few years camper
number 20,000 experienced this magical place. Camp Dudley has all the
aspects of a normal summer camp such as athletics, camping and drama, but
emphasis is placed on the moral and ethical development of the boys as
evidenced by the Camp’s motto, “The other fellow first.” The fund will be
sending a Boston area child for one month.

Scores
Summer scores is a six week summer camp which emphasizes on soccer, creative writing and
theater arts. This grant will be used for the Theater
portion of the program. The campers will have daily workshops
on acting, playwriting, music, dance and theater crafts.

Avoda Alumni Association
This grant will be used to provide a scholarship for a young boy to
attend Camp Avoda for one month in the summer of 2003. For over 75
years Camp Avoda has provided Jewish boys a safe and fun filled camping
experience. Located on Lake Tispaquin, Camp Avoda offers a wide range of
activities catered to a boy's individual interests.

Ballet Rox
Ballet Rox is an
intensive dance training program in which racially diverse Boston
children, ages 8 to 16, from low-income households study and perform
ballet, tap, hip-hop, flamenco, dance history, and music appreciation. The
grant this year will pay for summer dance and art camp scholarships.

Starfish
This camp fosters the success and growth of children with emotional,
behavioral and learning problems by providing individualized attention as
part of structured, nurturing and fun group programs. this grant will
send one child to a three week overnight summer session.

Newton South Assistant Tennis Coaches
Linda
graciously volunteered as assistant coach for eleven years
to ensure the continued success of the
program when the coaching position was cut from the school budget. To
continue her legacy the fund will contribute the cost necessary for the
girl's and boy's assistant
coaches. On May 30th, we held the 3rd Annual Garden City Cup,
which pits the Newton South teams against Newton North's tennis teams.

Medical Center - SPARK Center
Boston Medical Center does not turn
away families regardless of their ability to play for services.
The Center also has many educational programs to help vulnerable
children. This grant is directed toward the HIV Health and Fitness
Program. The new drug therapy regimens that many children that are
living with HIV/AIDS take have side effects that make these children
gain weight, which leads to low self-image. This program
will help these children create a healthy body image, and learn about
nutrition and and exercise routines.

Sailing
This educational program provides a fun and safe environment that
promotes positive life skills and values through the sport of sailing to
Boston children for no charge. The grant will pay for 2 summer
instructors in training, which is a skill building and jobs program for
teens in Boston.

Wins
This small organization promotes literacy as an essential building block
of education. This grant will expand the Power Lunch Program to the Whittemore School
in Waltham. The program pairs children with caring adults for weekly
one-on-one reading experiences.

Franklin I-0
A Phillips Brooks House Association Project, Franklin I-O
is a
seven week intensive and affordable summer day camp. The
at-risk children participate in creative learning and service
projects to promote academic achievement and self confidence. The camp
is run by college students.

Generations
Inc.
Generations recruits older adults volunteers to work with struggling
elementary school students. The grant will help expand the Reading
Coaches program. The volunteers will provide individualized
instruction for 45 minutes twice a week. The average increase with
this special assistance has been 2.5 reading levels in a year.

Clown Troupe
The Hospital Clown Troupe has
volunteers who visit the Boston Hospitals to bring love and laughter to
children who are carrying the heavy burden of illness. Last year, the
clowns brought smiles to over 4,000 children. Our donation will enable the
Troupe to
reach out to more disabled and ill.

Railroad Theater
Three youths will be able to attend a one week summer intensive acting
program. The youths have the opportunity to train in
acting, build literacy and reflect on conflicts and resolutions through
performance. This program had a very successful inaugural year
allowing underserved children to participate in a rich theater education.

Farm Therapeutic Equitation
This working horse farm successfully helps physically, emotionally, and
learning disabled child and adults by using the horse to expand the
personal, emotional, and physical boundaries. Each week during the school
year, children who attend the Perkins School for the Blind have the
opportunity to take care of and ride horses for an hour and a half.

First Night,
Inc
The Summer Beat program is part of the Neighborhood Network that brings
different communities together to share their differences and unify through
the arts. This grant will pay for an artist to teach at an inner city
community center for two weeks over the summer. Up to sixty children
will benefit from the artist's teaching.

Noah/O'Donnell
Schoolyard Summer Program
Creating safe, pleasant and fun schoolyard spaces that become a positive
resource for neighborhood children is a goal of Noah. This summer will
be the 9th season of a seven week community based program that
provides free, drop-in educational activities children ages 5 - 12.
Each day 60 - 100 people attend and this serves as their "summer camp".

Arts Council
The Arts Council works
on a grass roots level to create imaginative and resourceful programming
that is accessible to all to the City's residents--with a focus on reaching
youth and families who typically have little access to arts and culture.
This grant supports the Art in a Garden free summer outdoor arts and environmental
program.
